Nexplanon – implante anticonceptivo hormonal reversible de larga duración/long-acting reversible hormonal contraceptive implant.
¿Cómo conseguir NEXPLANON con seguro médico y qué opciones existen si no tienes seguro?
.
No estás sola.
Opciones si no tienes seguro
Compara otras opciones anticonceptivas

How to Get NEXPLANON Covered by Insurance—and Your Options Without Insurance
Updated July 2026
Are you considering NEXPLANON but unsure whether your insurance will cover it or how much you may have to pay? You are not alone. Coverage for a birth control implant can seem complicated because the medication, office visit and insertion procedure may be processed in different ways.
At Mi Clínica Hispana, we want to help you understand what to expect before scheduling your insertion.
What is NEXPLANON?
NEXPLANON is a small, flexible birth control implant placed just beneath the skin on the inner side of the upper arm. It does not contain estrogen, is more than 99% effective and is currently approved to prevent pregnancy for up to five years. It can be removed earlier if the patient wants to change methods or try to become pregnant.
Insertion and removal must be performed by a properly trained healthcare professional. NEXPLANON does not protect against HIV or other sexually transmitted infections.
Does health insurance cover NEXPLANON?
Many health insurance plans cover NEXPLANON. Plans subject to the Affordable Care Act’s contraceptive-coverage requirements generally provide coverage for FDA-approved contraceptive methods without a copayment, coinsurance or deductible. However, exceptions exist, and every policy has different rules.
Even when the implant is listed as “covered,” it is still important to confirm:
- Whether NEXPLANON is processed under the medical benefit or pharmacy benefit.
- Whether prior authorization is required.
- Whether it must be obtained through a specialty pharmacy.
- Whether the healthcare professional and clinic are in network.
- Whether both the implant and insertion procedure are covered.
- Whether there will be a copayment for the visit, testing or additional services.
- What coverage is available for future removal.
A benefits verification is an estimate based on the information available at that time; it is not a guarantee of payment. Coverage can change if the policy ends, the deductible changes or the insurance company determines that its requirements were not met.
The process for obtaining NEXPLANON through insurance
1. Schedule a consultation
The first step is determining whether NEXPLANON is an appropriate option for you. During the consultation, the healthcare professional reviews your medical history, medications, menstrual pattern, possibility of pregnancy and contraceptive goals. The benefits, risks and possible bleeding changes are also discussed.
2. Provide your insurance information
The clinic will normally need a clear copy of both sides of your insurance card, current personal information and, in some cases, additional information requested by the insurance company or specialty pharmacy.
3. Verify your benefits
NEXPLANON may be covered in one of two ways:
As a medical benefit: The clinic obtains the implant and then submits a claim to the insurance company for the medication and procedure.
As a pharmacy benefit: A prescription is sent to a specialty pharmacy. The pharmacy verifies coverage, obtains your authorization and ships the implant directly to the healthcare professional who will perform the insertion. NEXPLANON is not shipped to the patient to bring to the clinic.
4. Complete any additional requirements
Depending on the plan, the insurance company may request prior authorization, clinical documentation, a medical exception or use of a particular pharmacy. The specialty pharmacy may also call or text you to confirm the shipment and collect any amount you owe.
It is important to respond to these calls. If the pharmacy cannot reach you, the order may be placed on hold.
5. Confirm your cost before ordering
Before moving forward, ask for the estimated cost of the implant, insertion and any related visit or testing. If the amount is higher than expected, the clinic can check whether there is an error, a missing authorization or an available exception process.
6. Schedule the insertion
Once coverage has been approved and the implant has arrived at the clinic, the procedure can be scheduled. The total processing time depends on the insurance company and pharmacy. Some verifications are completed quickly, while others can take several days or weeks.
What happens if insurance denies the request?
An initial denial does not always mean NEXPLANON will never be covered. The first step is identifying the reason:
- Prior authorization is missing.
- The request was submitted under the wrong benefit.
- A specialty pharmacy is required.
- The healthcare professional or clinic is out of network.
- The insurance company needs additional documentation.
- The policy excludes the product or has an applicable exception.
Depending on the situation, the request may be corrected, additional documentation may be submitted or a medical exception may be requested. If the plan truly does not offer coverage, covered contraceptive alternatives and self-pay options can be reviewed.
How much does NEXPLANON cost without insurance?
The manufacturer’s published list price for one implant was $1,275.36 as of January 2026. This price is for the implant alone and does not include the consultation, pregnancy test, insertion, dressing, follow-up visits or future removal.
The list price is not necessarily what a patient will pay. The actual uninsured cost depends on where care is received, which programs are available and the healthcare professional’s charges. Before paying, request a written estimate that explains exactly which services are included.
Options if you do not have insurance
Ask about the self-pay price
Some clinics offer bundled pricing, self-pay discounts or payment plans. Ask specifically whether the estimate includes:
- Initial consultation.
- Pregnancy testing, when appropriate.
- NEXPLANON implant.
- Local anesthetic medication.
- Insertion procedure.
- Follow-up visit.
- Future removal.
Check whether you qualify for Healthy Texas Women
Healthy Texas Women provides health and family-planning services to Texas women who meet program requirements. Services may include contraception. Eligibility depends on factors such as age, Texas residency, income, pregnancy status and other health coverage. You must confirm both your eligibility and whether the healthcare professional participates in the program.
Look for a family-planning or Title X clinic
Clinics funded through the federal Title X program provide family-planning services and contraception using a sliding-fee scale based on income. In Texas, Every Body Texas maintains a network of Title X clinics. NEXPLANON availability and individual requirements may vary by location.
Ask about current assistance programs
Manufacturer programs and other financial resources can change. The clinic or the NEXPLANON support center may be able to determine whether a current program is available for which you can apply. Participation is not guaranteed and generally requires documentation.
Compare other birth control options
If NEXPLANON is not affordable at this time, ask about other safe, lower-cost contraceptive methods, such as progestin-only pills, injections, intrauterine devices or other alternatives appropriate for your medical history.
What information should you have ready?
To make the process easier, prepare:
- Your insurance card, if you have coverage.
- Current identification and contact information.
- A list of medications.
- The date of your last menstrual period.
- Information about birth control methods you have previously used.
- Any history of blood clots, liver disease, breast cancer or unexplained bleeding.
- Questions about coverage, side effects and changes in your period.
